Network-heavy architecture built on the cloud in record time

Our innovative approach took the company’s network and real-time functions to the cloud, integrated complex partner-driven systems, and set the stage for a growth run in new geographies.

Background

Communication service providers are entering newer geographies where growing data consumption and digital services offer market expansion scope. This coincides with technological advancements that modernize their IT and network components.

Networks are getting decoupled and reengineered to offer more flexibility for service providers to choose from network equipment makers and cloud software providers. This enables them to assemble a disaggregated network and IT stack on the cloud, which can scale across geographies.

However, service providers need a holistic, end-to-end solution to help realize a disaggregated network. Additionally, aggressive timelines and stiff competition are making the task seem impossible. These challenges are mounted over and above the inherent struggle in taking a telecom stack to the cloud: network-intensive architectures and real-time functions like billing, charging, and taxing customers across geographies

Client Situation

Our client is a leading communications and entertainment services company fast expanding in the Latin American and Caribbean markets.

Having entered two new territories in the Caribbean through acquisitions, the company wanted to accelerate the expansion and set itself up for future growth by making its network and IT stack scalable. For that the company needed a seasoned integrator who holds expertise and demonstrated experience in setting up a new infrastructure, ground-up, for a telecom company – in a new market.

Moreover, it wanted to complete the entire transformation process, including subscriber migration, and get ready for growth - all within 18 months.

Prodapt set up a
cloud-engineered network & IT infrastructure for a mobile operator in record time.

Diagnosis

The company required a cloud-engineered IT and network infrastructure, including OSS/BSS systems to build a scalable growth model.

Through the transition, the company had three objectives: its network setup should be built to be ‘elastic,’ meaning it can be expanded to cover new regions and customer bases in the future; functions like billing should be executed in real-time, with little-to-no latency; and thirdly, its businesses processes should be more efficient, to enable infrastructural and operational cost savings and fuel growth.

The transformation needed to be completed on an ambitious timeline so that the company could go to market quicker.

Solving It

Prodapt won the project amid a stiff contest to be the company’s Primary System Integrator (PSI), collaborating with multiple solutions providers and Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) software to build the mobile network from scratch and operationalize the service.

We executed two tasks in parallel. Firstly, we adopted open-source Infrastructure as Code to spin up the necessary infrastructure for the network and IT stack on the cloud for the new regions. It automates cloud component formation and quickens the process by a great margin. Secondly, we enabled migrating subscribers from the acquired Telco so the company could manage and track the end-to-end user journey.

Our experience in building solutions for communication service providers came in handy. Aware of the functional and technical gaps in building and configuring a telecom network on the cloud, we were able to deploy the right resources for the solution. We managed the entire lifecycle management of new customers, activation of the network, number porting, and several functions across the network and Business Support Services.

Prodapt integrated solutions from five primary partners for the core IT stack and 35 peripheral partners for the allied solutions, managing the entire process from onboarding to implementing partner solutions.

We leveraged a concept termed Shift Security Left, which takes security closer to the Design phase, far ahead to the Build phase. This ensured vulnerabilities were detected and eliminated much before network activation.

The two new markets had individual but scalable architecture built totally cloud-native – within 18 months.

The telco was able to spin up infrastructure for the new environments 80% faster than the traditional approach. The company executed product releases 2X faster and spotted 70% of vulnerabilities before they could impact the business.
