AWS-powered Data Modernization Optimizes Costs

Our AWS-powered solution enabled a leading UK fiber service provider to smoothly migrate complex ETL jobs to a cloud-based ETL system, setting the stage for comprehensive data modernization and substantial cost savings.

Background

In the face of rapidly expanding fiber roll-out and ever-growing customer bases, service providers need to manage data efficiently. The modern service landscape, characterized by data-driven applications, digital transformation initiatives, and the ubiquitous presence of connected devices, demands nothing less.

However, they encounter substantial challenges in the traditional Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) system. Primarily, the maintenance costs of these systems become a significant hurdle as the customer base and data volume increase. Additionally, older systems offer limited scalability, resulting in performance issues, extended processing times, and disruptions to critical data workflows.

These challenges give rise to an urgent need to embrace modern, agile, and cost-effective contemporary solutions.

Client Situation

Our client is one of the UK's leading fiber connectivity suppliers. They operate a UK-wide business-only telecoms network providing high-capacity fiber connectivity and collaboration solutions. Also, they invested in the growth of the network to facilitate seamless connectivity for their customers across locations.

With their expanding customer base, the client found it challenging to manage large amounts of data related to network connectivity, performance, customer usage, billing, and other operational aspects.

Furthermore, the client was facing high license costs associated with their ETL tool. Their existing tools proved effective in constructing basic data pipelines and executing straightforward ETL and data integration tasks. However, it had limited capabilities to handle substantial data volumes and meet the demand for processing real-time data from diverse sources, such as network equipment, customer billing systems, etc.

To address these challenges, the client decided to partner with Prodapt. The task was to replace their legacy ETL data center resources with new technologies and methods by migrating complex ETL jobs from an on-premise system to a cloud-based ETL solution.

With Prodapt’s expert-guided migration of complex ETL jobs to the cloud, the fiber connectivity provider realized significant cost savings, zero disruptions, and remarkable efficiency gains.

Diagnosis

To begin, our experts conducted an in-depth analysis of the client's ETL tool and found additional challenges. One significant challenge stemmed from the scattered data storage, as existing ETL data was spread across both on-premises and cloud environments. This dual-location data setup not only resulted in compatibility issues but also data consistency.

Furthermore, integrating older billing and IT Service Management (ITSM) applications using modern data pipelines involved data migration to cloud-based ETL solutions, which was complex, calling for specialized connectors and transformations.

Solving It

Prodapt leveraged the full potential of AWS to migrate ETL jobs from the client’s existing system to cloud-based ETL. This strategic shift significantly reduces licensed ETL expenses.

We leveraged the built-in scalability features of AWS S3 to ensure that the growing data volumes are stored well. AWS Identity Access Management (IAM) helped enable access to sensitive data for authorized personnel. A new Python framework was crafted to address tool compatibility challenges, ensuring secure and scalable data management during ETL.

Our cloud-based Data Management solution was seamlessly integrated into customer billing, ensuring accurate charges based on data usage and service plans. IT Service Management (ITSM) tool integration was used for service management and automation. This helped the service provider handle network incidents, maintenance, and customer support more effectively. Using versatile APIs, and connectors, we enabled a smooth exchange of data between different systems and applications in various data formats.

In addition, our experts meticulously planned and executed the migration, ensuring minimal disruption and peak performance. Rigorous testing ensured a seamless transfer of complex ETL jobs to the cloud, yielding minimal downtime and remarkable efficiency gains.

Our successful data migration of ETL jobs to the cloud helped the client slash costs while achieving their data modernization goal. The transition was executed seamlessly, guaranteeing zero disruption and downtime. The implementation of automated maintenance delivered measurable business advantages resulting in an average reduction of manual efforts by 95.35%.
