Embarking data excellence by nurturing a data-driven Culture and Quality.

Prodapt transformed a major media conglomerate's data management journey, optimizing technology with cloud-native solutions, dismantling content silos, and instituting efficient processes. Notably, manual effort decreased by an impressive 65%.

Background

Media enterprises with effective and well-established data management practices can achieve informed decisions, optimized resources across the enterprise, and deep insights into customer behaviour. This helps them deliver hyper-personalized experiences and gain an edge in the market.

However, common challenges include data silos, integration complexity, quality concerns, resistance to change, and lack of technological readiness. To surmount these hurdles, companies must establish a clear data strategy, invest in robust data management tools, provide employee training, and foster a culture that embraces data-driven decision-making.

In the dynamic and competitive entertainment industry, a data-driven approach is not just an advantage; it's essential for success.

Client Situation

Our client is a prominent American media conglomerate operating multiple television channels, syndicated digital content, direct-to-consumer apps, and more. They are popular for their diverse content portfolio, spanning documentaries, reality shows, and scripted series, and are constantly faced with the challenge of adapting to the ever-changing business landscape.

Amidst continuous launches of direct-to-consumer and digital services, the business realized a need for improved data management characterized by interconnectivity, cohesive strategy, easy access, enhanced technology, automation, as well as broader skillsets.

The executive leadership decided to review its data management process to inculcate a data-driven culture and improve data quality. Their immediate focus was to undertake a Data Review to enhance their understanding of how customers utilize data and realize its value.

To achieve this objective, they engaged the expertise of Prodapt for a comprehensive Data Review initiative. This was intended to delve deeper into their data resources, assess their value, and develop a strategic plan to unlock their full potential.

Migrating to a cloud-based data warehouse removes content siloes, improves productivity, and drives down costs.

Diagnosis

After conducting extensive analyses and a leadership workshop facilitated by Prodapt media SMEs, several improvement opportunities came to the forefront. The organization faced challenges with Data and Content silos, encompassing various forms of media like articles and videos. The isolated content storage hindered efficient data sharing across departments and platforms, causing inefficiencies and missed opportunities for content optimization and audience engagement.

The disconnected systems, content silos, and practice of report generation by multiple departments with their own data repositories led to a high level of report duplication. At the same time, approximately 90% of the workload was dependent on manual report generation, utilizing 47% of resources dedicated to this task, introducing a susceptibility to errors and operational inefficiencies.

These challenges emphasize the need for customized and strong data management solutions purpose-built to meet the unique requirements of our clients.

Solving It

Our solution involved migrating the existing Power BI onto a Cloud-Based Data warehouse, facilitating an extended connection from the Central Data Source to the Data Hub. The migration to a cloud-based infrastructure allowed for a centralized and interconnected data environment. It helped break down the barriers created by content silos, enabling smoother data flow and access across different departments

The use of Power BI facilitated content optimization by actively promoting informed decision-making and fostering a culture of data-driven collaboration. By upskilling the Information and Analytics (I&A) team, individuals gained the necessary expertise to break down content silos, enabling cross-department data sharing and collaboration. The adoption of Power BI ensured that data was effectively utilized, contributing to a culture of optimization in content creation.

The issue of report duplication is addressed by centralizing business logic. This entails consolidating business rules, processes, and data models for unified reporting. The approach established clear and standardized processes, reducing complexities and dependency. Empowered users with self-service tools further minimized reliance on specialized teams, making redundant requests fewer

Our solution fundamentally addressed low-quality data resulting from manual Excel input. The implementation of a Single Pane of Glass (SPOG) and centralized data ingestion significantly improved data quality and consistency. This integration ensured a unified and streamlined approach to data management, minimizing errors and discrepancies associated with manual input. The SPOG acted as a centralized control point, offering a comprehensive view of data, and fostering better data governance, ultimately contributing to improved overall data accuracy and reliability.

The media enterprise achieved a 20% improvement in in-house productivity, a 65% decrease in manual effort facilitated by the adoption of Qlik and Power BI, and an over 30% reduction in overall costs.
