An IP core network is the central part of a telecommunications network that provides various services to customers connected by the access network. IP core network and backbone network constitute the high-capacity communication facilities that connect primary nodes. The core/backbone network provides a path for the exchange of information between various sub-networks.

Edge network provides information exchange between the access network and core network. The devices and facilities in the edge network are switches, routers, IADs and a variety of MAN/WAN devices. Edge network provides entry points to the service provider’s core/backbone networks.
